Think of it this way, the best way to spit in the faces of those saying bad things about you is to keep trucking and doing the things you do.
Reputation helps when you want to find new friends, but if those friends only want your friendship because you're OOHYEAHPOPULAR, then there isn't much substance to that friendship.
Real friends will make the effort to know what sort of person you are. If people are going to think that you're the kind of person they think you are and not bother to try and find out, it's their loss, not yours.
