I used up my brains for yesterday's test. Mind you, I didn't get to finish the test. :| I barely scraped my last question. Passing is no problem, but whether I can get a distinction is another matter.

So yes, today. I don't feel smart enough to write long and lengthy replies or philosophical entries, so have a meme and tell me stuff. \o/ As usual, this is your chance to be frank with me if you have problems or anything.

Randomly, Setsuna says "nakama ga matteru" when Marina helps him back to the 00 Raiser. What's the English equivalent for 'nakama'?

'Comrade' sounds strange, and communist-ish.
'Friend' sounds too simple, and informal.
'Ally' sounds HUGE. Like, you'd probably say "Celestial Being and Katharon are allies". But would you say that "Lockon is my ally"? My dictionary says yes, but it doesn't sound right. :| Seems like 'ally's an acceptable translation!
'Associate'? Sounds too formal and more appropriate in a business setting.
'Companion'?

Yeah, I feel really mentally exhausted today. xD I don't know why, it's only morning for me right now.

I don't know the context of the conversation, or the canon relationship between them, but Lockon is my ally is a perfectly acceptable translation.

I'm not sure why it sounds 'huge' to you? It's a word for someone that you're on the same side as.

Yeah, it just means you're on the same side. Soldiers can be allies, countries can be allies.

The word always reminds me of the quote, "The enemy of my enemy is my ally." because you're both working against the same person/group, so you have the same goal in mind. You're allies.

Although, if they're closer than just a professional 'on the same side' sort of thing, then ... friend would probably work better. Also, uh... comrade I believe is just another word for friend? It's ... not English in origin, so I always thought it meant the same thing.

"Crazy". XD It's typical for a person to react in an environment that makes themselves seem more crazy than they actually are. It also depends on views too. However if you're able to analyze other people in the same environment rationally, then I don't see anything wrong. You're only as normal you as can be, reacting how other people act or behave. Just ...bwah?

If you ask a One Piece hardcore fan it will be THERE IS NO EQUIVALENT FOR GLORIOUS NAKAMA.
My understanding is it's mostly friends who are also united to achieve something. Like, if you're in a band where all the personnels are friends, you're nakama, but your friends outside the band are tomodachi. But sometimes it can be taken as chummy friends. If I translate it to Indonesian I probably use "sahabat" (ask your local Malay person :P). In English, I'd use "comrade" or "friends/buddies" depending on context.

The One Piece thing made me chuckle, because I know it's true. XD *has at least one One Piece fan on my f-list*
I used to use 'comrade' too, but I've always wondered if it was suitable. I've also seen others using 'teammates' which sounds even weirder. D: But since both 'comrade' and 'ally' [and 'friend] are acceptable, I'll probably stick to using them.

I'm an OP fan too, actually xD It's my favorite shonen of all time. I won't go so far as to chew out every translator who dared translate nakama, but coming from that fandom, it later made me feel annoyed in Bleach fandom when shipwarmongers downplay rival ships by saying "they can't be canon, she says they're only nakama!"

Ally sound huge and serious to me too ^^; Maybe there's a cultural reason for that, dunno.

-- it's one of those words that do not have a direct English equivalent; but the I think the most appropriate word here is "partner". Yes, "partner" in Japanese is "aibou", but let's just say it's the sentiment that counts. "Partner" in this context would definitely be someone whom you've worked with, working with, and someone you trust.

Agreeing on the lack of 00P/00F RPers! ;__; I guess people don't RP characters from those two because of the lack of English sources. If I could read scanlations for those, I'd have a better feel of the characters' personalities and then be able to write good apps and play them well.

rofl yeah all I've got to say on the nakama thing is ohhh One Piece. I think it is really hard to find a word that's fitting, though. While it's dumb to leave it untranslated and looks really unprofessional, there isn't a word in English that gets the meaning across 100%.
